LED Database: CRI (Ra), CRI (Re), TLCI, CQS, and TM-30-15

Introduction

For a thorough explanation of our ranking and testing procedures, as well as how to interpret the various color rendering data, spectra, and graphics, check out Page 1, “Understanding the Complete LED Database” page.

Briefly, measurements of all LED lights were taken with the Asensetek Lighting Passport SMART Spectrometer that was synced with the Spectrum Genius Mobile App. Lights tested at NAB 2016 are labelled “NAB”; lights tested in our blacked out studio are labelled “Studio.” We compared some controls in both environments and found the difference to be negligible. Lights are ranked by averaging together CRI (Re), CQS, and TLCI values, then grouping them every 0.5 values. The best possible rank using this method is 100.

(For those interested in last year’s LED models, here is the 2015 LED database, which includes CRI (Ra) and CRI (Re) )

can’t speak for colormetrics but the yn-900 is a great budget light (we use a few) as long as you change the noisy fan. It’s the only thing I don’t really like about them

I’ll see if we can get a demo unit.

Good to know about the fan. Some people assume that LEDs are low heat, but they actually aren’t. So fans are necessary on mid to large size fixtures. LEDs are much cooler than incandescent, but there is still heat that needs to be dealt with. Heat can quickly shorten the lifespan of an LED, including the small amount given off by household LED bulbs.

Nice! I don’t think FloLight was showing that light at NAB this year. However, every chance we get we’re adding more and more LED lights to the database. I’ll try to get ahold of the BladeLight to add it.

Looks like bad news for the CAME-TV High CRI lights. I always wondered why they were so coy about their numbers on these and it is nearly impossible to get any rebranded version to release any hard data on these lights.

Well, I found that the CAME-TV High CRI lights are rebranded Lishuai lights. The GTC who created the TLCI rating, has a database on their site of test results on certain lights. The 1024 scores a TLCI of 72 and 71! Just awful.

Here are the results for the Lishuai/CAME-TV/Fotodiox High CRI lights:

There are a few companies coming out with products similar to the Westcott Ice Light. Just looking at the Yongnuo YN360 I see a few design issues. I’ll get one to see how the color quality does.

This database is incredibly useful. I am glad to see it restored.

Just a suggestion: Can you add a sort by “newest” or “date tested” so that we can easily see new additions as they’re added to the database?

    Thanks again for your work.

That’s a great idea Joe. We have a lot of new LED models that we are processing and will add a section in the left sidebar that shows the newest ones. Right now a majority of the lights in the database were tested April 2016.

The two lights look nearly identical. Could they possibly be the exact same light, just sold under two brands? I noticed this quite a bit as I measured all the LED light being shown at NAB 2016.

At this point we are backlogged measuring LED lights from companies that have asked us to test individual lights and add them to the database. I will reach out to Godox and Jinbei to see if we could get a sample unit to test. Otherwise we can test them if they are at NAB 2017.

Yes, buying a spectrometer to test an inexpensive light doesn’t make sense. This is why we decided to help everyone out by doing the work for the film community. The good news is that every year the average LED light has much better color quality than the previous year, so it is getting easier and easier to find lower cost, high quality LEDs.

I only saw the LS1s (studio) version on this list. I’m assuming the LS1C (bi-color version of the Light Storm) isn’t on this list b/c it was intoduced in 2015??? I know the studio version was introduced this year which is why maybe its the only LS version on this list? However that woudn’t explain why the 628’s made the list.

Wouldn’t the Light Storm LS1c (bi-color) rank high on this list? Based on all of the reviews I’ve seen it appears to have a rating of around a 96CRI so it would place fairly high on this list.

Anyone familiar with the Lightstorm LS1c (bi-color) and why it is not on this list? Seems to be one of the best lights on the market. I was about to purchase a few of them until I saw this list and realized they were not on here. Could anyone enlighten me on why this light isn’t on the top list? Does anyone suggest a better Bi-color light with the same power and CRI at the same price point? It seems to be one of the best lights on the market yet its not on this list.

Can anyone advise if the LS1C is a good purchase or is there a better option on this list at a similar price point? Any advice would be appreciated. I bought LED early and have some lights that have a green spike in them and I’m needing to replace everything. I’m thinking a LS1c for the key, LS1c for the fill and a set of 3 x 628c panels for background and overhead lighting. My thoughts are this setup would be a good all purpose lighting setup that would have excellent light quality and would be extremely flexible. Any advice? I don’t want to buy yet another set of lights. I love the set of 3 Flixel’s but they just don’t seem to put out enough power to fully light a set for even a simple interview or makeup tutorial. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts as to a the perfect lighting kit for all around video shoots.

It’s interesting how the R9 value with the Litepanel Astra changed from the previous year’s measurement with the Sekonic. On this meter, it turns out a lot better–by a magnitude of some 10 points. I saw that for the Astra, on the picture chart, it says (next generation). Is this accurate? I understand there’s only one Astra model so far, unless you mean it’s the next generation from the 1×1 which was not named Astra. Please clarify, thanks.

The differences you are seeing between the databases are not due to the spectrometer used. I know this because I own some 2015 Litepanel Astras and use them as one of my references between spectrometers.

The LED industry is rapidly improving, and the color quality from the average LED brand is surprisingly better than the previous year. As a result, most LED companies switch out the emitters used to best utilize any and all advancements. The 2016 Litepanel Astras fixed some issues that the previous models were having. (I heard talk among big time DPs that the issues were widespread. Again, this is not a surprise for any LED brand because the industry is improving so quickly.) Think of it like car models, and how the model may have the same name, but certain model years are better than others. I have yet to see LED companies change the model name as they make improvements, so it is difficult to track the changes. This makes buying used LEDs a bit tricky for those without spectrometers.

Yes, Joe, we will be testing more lights at NAB this week, ALL WEEK! In fact, we are going to attempt to color test EVERY MODEL of light at the show. There are over 70 LED vendors listed, so this will be quite the task. We even bought new shoes so that our feet wouldn’t give out half way. Wish us the best! (Note: processing the data may take some time. We are devoting a lot of our resources toward speeding this up. It may involve uploading partial results as they are created, then filling in the rest later.)

Hi, Is the Pixapro 100D Mk II going to be on this list? Probably PRC Made by an UK Brand, looks very interesting. Was it at NAB? Many thanks, your work is terrific!

They weren’t at NAB this year or last, and I haven’t seen their fixtures being used on any sets I’ve visited. So unfortunately I haven’t tested them yet. I’ll reach out to them to see if I can borrow a test unit.

Many thanks, actually i found out the 100d mkII is based (or a re-brand) on the Neweer EL-1000, you can find on amazon. The UK company looks serious though, they sells a lot of accessories and provide a good customer support.Got to see if the CRI/TLCI is what they say. They sell also a led panel, the VNIX 1000/1500, that in some reviews has been compared to the Aputure LC1.

Good to know. Yes, there is a lot of rebranding that goes on in the LED industry. We ran across it often at NAB both this year and last. Thanks for sharing this info.

Hey Tim, I know many of us are anxiously awaiting the new readings from NAB, and thank you for the mammoth undertaking.
I am wondering if you tested the Falcon Eyes RX-18T (Daylight only). I would love to know the Re, TLCI and R9 scores on that, as I’m about to pull the trigger on one.

All but one of the Falcon Eyes LEDs that I tested were bicolor (LPL S6002TD, LPW 100TD, SO 66TD, and SO 88TD). The non-bicolor fixture was the LP 253 daylight. Most likely the results for the LP 253 will be similar to the fixture you are looking at, but no promises.

Here are the results for LP 253:
      Rank: 93.0; CRI (Ra): 94.66; CRI (Re) 92.28; TLCI: 94.9; R9: 87.2; R12: 71.0.
(R12 is saturated blue, which LEDs have a hard time with, sometimes more than R9.)

Other than R9, R10 (87.8), and R12, all other CRI (Re) values are in the low to mid 90’s which is great!

      Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! I wonder if the values will be the same for the flex fixture I’m looking at. Those numbers don’t sound too bad aside from R12. Thanks again and looking forward to the other results!

We expect to have most of the well known brands up on the database by the end of next week. All the important information will be included in these fixtures, although the graphics might not all be complete just yet.

We haven’t tested any Boltzen (also known as Came-TV) fixtures yet. Hopefully we’ll get some so we can add them to the list. Otherwise, we’ll test them at NAB 2018.

I just found this database today as I’m searching for a cheap but great setup on a tight budget, and wow So helpful!!

I was looking at the YONGNUO YN600L online until I came across this database and then I noticed the NanGuang CN-Luxpad43 had a rating of 93.5 and at 1/4 the price of others in the same rating

    But no barn doors 🙁

What are your thoughts on this light?

I mainly do short films, music videos and cable commercials an sit down interviews and looking for something cheap / good and portable

Any help / comments would be great

    Thanks in advance,

For the price the NanGuang CN-Luxpad43 has pretty good results. A few things that jump out at me: 1) The bicolor range isn’t that large. We normally measure at 3200K and 5600K. The fact that the “5600K” setting gave back a 4818K color temperature tells me that might be close to the top of the range or it might be difficult to dial in temperatures close to the end of the ranges. 2) The saturated red value (R9) is VERY low at the tungsten end of the bicolor range, but is really good at the daylight end. So if you are filming anything with a lot of red, such as someone’s face, you will want to use the daylight end of the bicolor range. If you need tungsten in these instances, it is better to gel it with Rosco or Lee gels because you’ll retain better R9 values. 3) The daylight spectrum is pretty “bouncy,” but it isn’t too bad. If the ARRI Skypanels can get away with bouncy spectra, then this one should too.

Yes, not having barn doors can be a problem. However, a cheap solution is using black Cinefoil and create your own barn doors. Cinefoil is a HEAVY DUTY aluminum foil that is painted matte black. You can easily reuse pieces for years, so a small roll will last you a very long time. Plus, Cinefoil has lot of uses elsewhere on set controlling lightspill, so it is one of those must have’s in your set bag.

Hey Tim, Wow. Thank you so much for such a fast reply and such informative info on the NanGuang CN-Luxpad43. For the $$ it seems to be a decent option. So your basically saying to use it in the daylight mode and gel it up if / when need tungsten setting?

What do you think about the Yongnuo 600L3200-5500K. They seem a little cheaper but I couldn’t find that on this awesome site.

I also see B& H has a deal on the Dracast LED500 Silver Series Bi-Color for $179 I saw the review on the 1000Series, I wonder if the same applies with this LED500 Series.

We have not seen any LEDs from Yongnuo.

One thing to note about LEDs is that the adage “you get what you pay for” is often in full force. The cheap LEDs from Amazon, and from department stores and hardware stores (often used by low budget filmmakers and as practicals) have TERRIBLE color quality. By “terrible” I mean that the red qualities (specifically R9) are basically non-existent. The reason for this is that the red phosphors used to broaden the red qualities is fairly expensive and so inexpensive fixtures simply can not afford to use those materials in their LEDs. This isn’t a technology issue; it’s a sourcing issue. As such, I doubt it will change in the future.

That said, I rarely can justify buying the VERY expensive fixtures except when brightness is the issue. Often with the expensive lights you are really paying for the brand name.

As for the Dracast LED500 Silver Series Bi-Color, I literally was working up the data on that fixture yesterday and I expect to have it posted by the end of the day. (It takes about 20 minutes PER FIXTURE to research and create the graphics for an entry into the LED database, and so it takes time to post everything.) The spectra for this Dracast model is fairly good, and I’d say it’s a better buy than the NanGuang CN-Luxpad43. The Dracast also has a broader CCT (correlated color temperature) range and has good color across that range.

One broad observations I’ve seen with LEDs (and confirmed by talking with LED manufacturers) is that all LEDs basically are formulated for daylight, then “filtered” to create tungsten LEDs. The result is that, per watt, daylight LEDs are going to be brighter than tungsten. This means that with bicolor LEDs, the daylight end of the range will be brighter than the tungsten end. Of course, the middle of the bicolor range will be the brightest since both sets of LEDs will be used.

We have not tested any lights from Viltrox. I looked at their website to see if they might be a rebranded version of another light (which is common with LED companies), but that isn’t the case.

About 1/3 of the LEDs in our database are ranked 95.0 and above, so it is possible that their CRI claims are accurate. However, most likely they are referring to the CRI (Ra) average instead of the CRI (Re) average. As we’ve mentioned in our Understanding the LED Database article, CRI (Re) includes colors that LEDs have a harder time reproducing, namely saturated blue (R12) and saturated red (R9). As a result companies that produce lower quality LEDs don’t like to mention the CRI (Re) value, instead only reporting the CRI (Ra) value.

As a photographer, many of my colleagues and myself are expected to dabble a bit with movies on the side. Many of the flashes used now incorporate leds for various reasons and some are claimed to be suited for video also.
I use the Elinchrom ELB 400 flashes and to the eye the light from the led is usable.
Testing those lights would benefit a lot of us and help in creating better footage without having to buy double sets of gear.
Sorry for the extra workload 😉

Very good to know! I didn’t realize that still photographers also are using a lot of LED fixtures.

We test whatever LEDs we can get our hands on. Buying fixtures just to test is out of the question since that would be one HUGE credit card bill! So instead we test mainly at trade shows or if we know someone who just got a new light. We’ll plan to go attend photo trade shows too to test LEDs made specifically for your demographic.

      Hi Chris,

I have never heard of the GVM brand of LEDs, which sort of surprises me since it looks like a higher quality light fixture. The LED market continues to grow by leaps and bounds, so it is possible they are new. Or they could be a rebranded light. All that to say, I can’t really give you any advice on them until we test them.

I do know Dracast and continue to be surprised by their color quality for the price. They are well built fixtures and I’m surprised they aren’t used more often.

So between recommending a known light (Dracast) and an unknown light (GVM) that seem to have the same price and specs, I’d point you to Dracast.

Thanks for pointing me to these lights. I will reach out to them to see if I can get some samples to test. Their offering is similarly priced to Quasar Science lights, although Quasar’s tubes have two and three pronged American plugs vs. the two pins on the MMS bulbs.

I compared the price of those two brands’ tubes.
MMS tube is $289 for the colorful version.
QUASAR tube is $399.99 for the colorful version.

If possible, I would like to know the price of the bi-color version of MMS tubes. I cannot find this version in the MMS store.

Thanks very much for your work. Hope my donation is supporting you.

    Hi Tim!

I appreciate all the work that went in to this database. I was wondering if the top spot is still held by the Yuji VTC? It’s been a few years and I would think that the manufacturers have made some progress, on tm-30-15, that is.

    Thanks!

There have been a lot of advancements. Yuji actually makes diodes and emitters for some of the best companies, so it makes sense they are at the top. We haven’t come across anything recently that had better color quality, but at the same there is more to a light than color quality: softness/hardness of the light, how long the fixture will last, power, luminance, etc.

Hey Ian, we have not tested the Digital Sputnik DS1, but would love to. There are so many new LEDs on the market it takes work to keep up. I have heard positives and negatives about it, but all third-person so I don’t feel comfortable repeating until they are my observations too. RGB lights have their place, but also have limitations. The DS1 is a RGBW which helps it to overcome some problems, but RGBWW is a more complete solution to the RGB shortcomings. I will reach out to Digital Sputnik and get a demo to test and review. Thanks!
